The holidays are coming, and that means it’s almost time for Makesgiving, our Holiday Make-A-Thon! Over the past eight year we’ve set aside the Friday after Thanksgiving to welcome aspiring makers to join us in making things for the holidays, because making is awesome, and a gift that’s made is better than a gift that’s bought.

There will be a variety of making activities, some old favorites will return, and we’ll have a few new things up our collective sleeves. Skips the madness of the mall and come hang out at the space with us! You probably have questions, but don’t worry, check out our Makesgiving Holiday Make-A-Thon page for the answers.

It’s happening on Friday, November 29th, 2019 from 1pm-5pm and it’s free and open to the public, though we do ask that you register so we can plan appropriately for the event. We hope to see you there!

This is how excited you’ll be at Makesgiving.

Holiday Make-A-Thon 2013 https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/2013/11/holiday-make-a-thon-2013/ https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/2013/11/holiday-make-a-thon-2013/#comments Sun, 03 Nov 2013 15:16:58 +0000 http://milwaukeemakerspace.org/?p=6575 Make-A-Thon 2013
Yes indeed, we’re doing it again. Some call it “Makesgiving” or “Make Friday” but we prefer the “Holiday Make-A-Thon” which is an event where we team up with Bucketworks and invite the public in to MAKE things instead of BUY things for the holidays.

In past years we’ve provided CNC’d ornaments that people have decorated (paint, glitter, googly eyes) and we also had dried gourds to decorate, we did 3D printed cookie cutters (designed by kids) and DIY wrapping paper and we’ve even taught people how to solder.

We’re still working on the list for this year’s activities, but it should be Maker-tastic!

It’s all happening from 12pm to 5pm on Friday, November 29th, 2013. This year we’ll be at Milwaukee Makerspace (2555 S. Lenox St. in Milwaukee) instead of Bucketworks.

(This is a family-friendly event, and it’s free to the public, though we do ask for a donation to help support the event so we can keep doing it every year.)

(Wanna see who’s coming? You can RSVP on the Facebooks.)

Meetings Canceled! https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/2012/12/meetings-canceled/ https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/2012/12/meetings-canceled/#respond Wed, 19 Dec 2012 14:00:32 +0000 http://milwaukeemakerspace.org/?p=4685 Crazy Calendars!

We all love making, and we all love meeting each week and talking about making and updating the group on our latest projects, but the holidays are here, and people have a lot of other commitments, so in the interest of taking a break, we’re going to cancel the next two weekly meetings.

So on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 and Tuesday, January 1st, 2013 don’t come to the Makerspace! Well, you’re welcome to come, but know that there may be no one there, and we won’t be having meetings. (And if anyone is there, they’ll probably just be moving things.)

Happy Holidays, Maker! See you for the next weekly meeting in our new space at 2555 S. Lenox Street some time in January 2013!

Ho Ho Lights https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/2012/12/ho-ho-lights/ https://milwaukeemakerspace.org/2012/12/ho-ho-lights/#comments Sat, 01 Dec 2012 22:00:45 +0000 http://milwaukeemakerspace.org/?p=4689 My Husband and I wanted to put up some kind of Christmas decorations in our apartment windows over looking the city. After talking about it for a while, I decided to make lighted letters saying, “HO HO HO” …but since we only have two pairs of windows, it would have to just be, “HO HO”.

In the wee hours on Black Friday, we got the materials: 4 sheets of wood, 4 boxes of 100 count LED lights, and extension cords. After sketching out the design…

…and cutting out the letters…

…it was time to drill the 400 holes and hot glue all the lights in place.

It only took a weekend to make and hang these and I think the end result is well worth it.
